An Eastside Real Estate Office that's got Cops covered

Housed in a small cottage on the grounds of the Los Angeles Police Academy in Elysian Park, Noemi Baeza advises young cadets as well as senior officers on a topic not covered by LAPD instructors: real estate. Baeza is not a police officer. She's a Century 21 agent. After a decade working mostly with police officers and firefighters, Baeza last year leased the small building with a red-tiled roof and blue shutters that is located just behind the main gate to the academy. For someone working with cops, only an office at Parker Center would have been more ideal.

"It's been very successful," said Baeza, who rents the cottage from the Los Angeles Police Revolver and Athletic Club, which owns many of the buildings on the academy grounds. The results have been so promising that Baeza, who promotes herself as the "realtor of choice for peace officers and firefighters," has leased the quaint cottage for another two years for her business, Noemi Baeza Assoc.

Despite being skilled at working in dangerous situations, cops still need a lot of hand holding when it comes to buying and selling a home and getting a mortgage. Even with relatively high-paying careers and job security, LAPD officers still face a challenge in securing loans and finding a suitable and affordable property, Baeza said. Not surprisingly, officers don't like to live in the communities they patrol for security reasons, she said. Some popular home buying locations include the San Fernando Valley, Orange County and the Inland Empire.

Baeza can relate to the home choices and lifestyle of many of her customers. Her husband is an LAPD officer. "I can sympathize."
